Pay it forward
Let us show you how
Cub’s baskets was founded by Debbie Shawa in 2020.
When I was a baby girl growing up in Lansing, Michigan my dad (Ed Shawa) bought me a rolling cub bear toy that I loved to pull behind me all over the house. I was also a chubby baby and so my dad nick named me “Cub a Chub” and then became shortened to “Cub”. My uncles would then follow suit and my nick name has not left me since.
As I was growing up my dad would ask me what i wanted to do when I grow up as all parents do and my reply was “I’m going to run a candy store”. I loved candy. As I grew older and started baking with my grandma I learned her recipes and liked baking. Therefore naturally I wanted to own a bakery so if i did I would name it “Cub Cakes”. I ended up turning in high school to another love of mine which is designing homes. After I graduated and went on to college I followed that path to owning my own residential construction and home designing company; “Holbrook Honorable Homes, Inc.”. I closed that in 2000 when I decided to move up to the Northern Michigan area and raise my family.
As I was starting my family I went into the healthcare field as a certified nurses aid. It was a rewarding career that I chose to leave 3 years later as I decided to start school online to go into more of my graphic design field of communications; as I raised my 3 children. I began a job in the casino of my own tribe LTBB of Odawa Indians located in Petoskey, Mi., hoping to become a part of the marketing team after I finished this Bachelor of Art degree. Unfortunately that was not achieved, instead I went back into management. As I continued to work at the casino I decided once again to return to school for another change in career. I had successfully graduated my two sons from High school and my oldest off to Technical school; therefore I started a 4 year plan to achieve 2 more associate degrees (one in Marketing and one in Business) and then go on to achieve 1 more Bachelor degree but this one would be in science (BS). I started school in fall 2016 and completed spring 2020, with this I decided to start my own business.
But which one? I was torn but I thought about it. I recently lost my dad to Cancer in June, 2017 before that I had lost my Aunt (his sister) Claudia to cancer some years back. I would always make gift baskets for my family, friends and coworkers for holidays or special occasions in their lives. Giving a part of yourself is always an instant gratification therefore I decided that I could use my creativity to bring good into the world through my baskets. I came up with the name from my dad’s memories and his caring, supportive heart for me throughout my life and so “Cub’s Baskets” was created.
By creating Cub’s Baskets, I wanted to show how I want to give back to other’s that may be going through the same difficulties that my family and I have gone through with Cancer. I also chose another health issue that affects all of us in one form or another including myself either through depression, anxiety, suicide, short or long term someone suffers from Mental Health issues and I would like to support that cause too through Cub’s Baskets.
My company will do this using the Pay it forward program: with every basket sold a $1 donation will go to the group of their choice (Cancer or Mental Health) for awareness. Each basket contains a bear inside with a tag to tell the receiver what charity was helped and on the outside of the basket is another bear with the tag for the giver to keep for a keepsake to remind them how many people they have touched in one gift.
I recently lost my Uncle (Garry Shawa) to cancer March 2020 and step Uncle (Jeff Sprague) September 2020.
My mission is to Pay it forward one basket at a time.
Love, Cub
